LWPB Principals Dan Pruitt and Rick Siler headed to sunny Florida a couple of weeks ago to check out progress on one of our projects at Eglin Air Force Base. The new 78,000 SF Integrated Training Center includes classrooms, virtual trainers, aircraft mockups, administration and operations areas that support the F-35. It’s always great to see things coming together!

Meet Angie Clarkson!

I came to LWPB in the summer of 2010, just after the birth of my second son (it’s 'Testosterone City' at our house!). I’d been at LWPB for about a week when it became clear that this is a great place to be a working parent – my previous employer didn’t provide the flexibility and family-friendly environment that is LWPB’s trademark. Wrangling two small children and managing a full-time job was suddenly much more manageable!

Originally, I was brought on for my expertise in government projects and healthcare design. I enjoy all sorts of design problems and was happy to contribute to these sorts of projects. However, as soon as I was afforded the opportunity to work on a K-12 project, I fell in love. I’m a public school teacher’s kid. I often joke that, while I adore child development (cognitive, emotional, and physical), I lack the temperament for classroom management – I never would have made it in the classroom! I’m not equipped to shape future generations the way that teachers do, but we can all use our unique talents to contribute in other ways. Being a teacher is one of the most challenging professions on Earth. Education is hard. School administration is hard. Public education is changing all the time, with schools taking on more and more responsibility for the health of their communities – and public school districts are taking on these imperatives with fewer dollars per student. As architects and school planners, we can’t fix a lot of these things. What we can do is devise and craft learning environments that remove barriers and increase flexibility. We can also help aging schools identify ways to improve their existing facilities. When we create learning spaces that can be changed and shaped to support the teaching and learning of the future, we empower teachers to do their best work.

Over the last decade at LWPB, I’ve been given the opportunity to make a difference in my community and in the State of Oklahoma. It’s a vocation and not a job to me, and I find myself excited about even the smallest renovation projects. It’s exciting to have found a niche that speaks to my heart so strongly and mentors that encourage me to grow and learn.

Oakdale Park Bond

Oakdale Public School passed their bond election, which will include a recreation area the students have named The Launchpad. We provided this promotional video to excite everyone’s imagination. We are ready to get started!

This Fall we attended the Northwest Oklahoma City Chamber Taste of Northwest at the Bricktown Events Center. It was a fantastic Rock & Roll themed fundraising night. The event included great food from 20 local restaurants and some competitive silent auction action! We are excited to share LWPB Architecture has been nominated for the 2019 Business of the Year, by the NWOKC chamber.
It’s always fun to see the excitement and atmosphere some of our projects can create. This was the second season for Edmond North’s new football stadium, and it was a treat to see their LED Friday Night Lights this Fall. We are so proud of this project, and are so glad to see students enjoying the facility.

There’s something special about ribbon-cuttings and this one was well worth the trek to Tulsa. What an honor to have been a part of Tulsa Air National Guard Mission Training Center.
This 20,000 square-foot Mission Training Center houses four state-of-the-art flight simulators to provide realistic combat training for fighter pilots. If you want to learn more about this, check out this story from ONR on OETA.
WOW is it fun to see the progress on Capps Middle School! Capps will be ready for the 2020-2021 school year, which will be here before we know it. If you’re not familiar with this project, it’s a show-stopper! This school is built on two sides of a creek and connected by a Media Center bridge spanning the water. With windows everywhere, students will be able to enjoy the natural beauty of the site every direction they look.

We’re thankful for so much, especially our employees! The Thursday before Thanksgiving we held our annual potluck. There was so much delicious food to enjoy, and the conversation and fellowship was even better! Just a few weeks later, we gathered again for our Christmas Party.
If you haven’t been to Packard’s lately, check them out – the food was amazing! We had a blast with a Murder Mystery event, donning some costumes and festive personas for a hilarious evening of entertainment (apparently our HR guy hangs out with some pretty shady characters!). Celebrating the holidays together is something we really cherish here at LWPB.

Did you know LWPB is an “Exemplary AXP Friendly Firm”? This is the highest honor available by the AIA Oklahoma AXP Friendly Firm Program; we love our interns and are happy to support them. We provide study materials and subscriptions to Amber Books (giving interns access to the most current study materials and practice exams), pay for each passing exam, provide up to 5 paid days off for taking the exams, and pay AIA and Assoc. AIA dues. Recently LWPB Project Architect Jason Hukill took a group of interns to the Capps Middle School construction site.
It was a great opportunity to see an on-going project ‘in action’.

Thank you to our friends at Lingo Construction for allowing us this opportunity!
